Rising Above

RISING ABOVE reflects the strength and courage we see exhibited by children throughout the world time and time again as they'rise above' whatever disadvantages, difficulties or obstacles they face in life. We aim to improve the lives of children who are forgotten, misused, sexually abused and devastated by natural disasters, both in Malaysia and wherever the need arises
in other parts of the world.

As a fund-raising initiative, the campaign is unique in that appeal is made for four specific projects run by these organisations and not for the organisations themselves. This will allow the donor community not only to donate money to a worthy cause, but get involved further (in ways appropriate to each giver), to track the progress of each project, and to monitor the social return on their investment.

Funds collected will be apportioned according to the execution budget submitted for each project:

Yayasan Salam will be providing a shelter for deprived children in the Chow Kit area of Kuala Lumpur.
Protect & Save The Children will be implementing a nationwide personal safety programme in Malaysian primary schools.
Freedom & Fun for Kids will be running a vocational training programme for children working in bonded labour in India.
Force of Nature Aid Foundation will be launching an educational initiative for children in Pakistan still suffering from the South Asian Earthquake.

As one of Rising Above’s partner organisations, international auditing firm Horwath will act as auditors for the entire campaign and will report on the receipt and utilisation of funds after the conclusion of the campaign.

Rising Above is committed to ensuring that the campaign is not only profiled and documented during the fund-raising stage in 2006, but also that awareness is carried through to implementation of the four projects as they get off the ground in early 2007. This is where the real impact of the campaign lies – in the application of funds raised to better the lives and rights of children; and where all stakeholders in this effort (partner non-profit organisations, donors, corporate partners, media partners etc.) will gain a real sense of collective achievement.

The unique combination of these projects has so exemplified the very real issues impacting children that it has attracted the personal support of our Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, YB Dato’ Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

While the initial phase of Rising Above is as a fund-raising and awareness-raising mechanism for the identified projects, the campaign hopes to mark the start of a Children's Coalition in Malaysia that will provide a collective and effective voice for Malaysian organisations and individuals who are concerned for the well-being of children and who support the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Excess funds not used for the 4 projects will be held in trust for future Rising Above campaigns and for initial activities of the Coalition.
